havering college mad digital challenge
Here at Havering College, we greatly encourage all learners and staff to be creative, resourceful and innovative.

The MAD (Make a Difference) Digital Challenge, launching on Monday 19th March, is designed to encourage an entrepreneurial approach to problem solving and will require students to work cooperatively to harness technology and develop ideas in a professional capacity.

Students are invited to propose an idea for how the college can use technology to improve the teaching, learning and assessment experience, or the student experience as a whole. You do not need to be a programmer or a designer to win; all that is needed is a strong idea and the enthusiasm and commitment to see it through from paper to reality.

You can submit your ideas by yourself or as a team. All you have to do is film a short presentation of no more than two minutes about your idea, which can be done on your mobile, and submit a short write-up of your idea by completing the form below.

havering college legal secretary industry day
Our legal secretary students recently enjoyed a careers day with some of London’s top law firms, allowing them to gain an insight into the industry, and realise what they could achieve post-college.

In attendance were Linklaters, an international law firm headquartered in the capital, Herbert Smith Freehills, who won 2017 Firm of the Year at the annual Australasian Law Awards, as well as Baker McKenzie, Eversheds Sutherland, Laytons, and Ryder Reid.

The day kicked off with presentations from some of the companies, which detailed their history, the work they do, and the personal journeys of some staff members. One such company that delivered a presentation was Baker McKenzie, the second largest law firm in the world by headcount, which really emphasises the opportunities available to our students.

Following the presentations the students completed various career-led activities with the employers, with tasks including telephone technique, proofreading and event planning. This allowed them to not only gain hands-on experience with duties they will undoubtedly be fulfilling in years to come, but also to seek careers advice, discuss current opportunities and ask any questions to the companies.

To conclude proceedings, Catherine Foley, Assistant Principal for the Faculty of Business and Technology, presented certificates to the students who performed well in the educational activities.

havering college catering
Our catering students enjoyed an informative day out with Delaware North at the London Stadium in London to learn more about the ins and outs of this lucrative industry. The day consisted of food tasting, a full tour of the catering establishment, and a mini cooking session that involved prepping meats and making truffle cabbage puree with executive head chef, Gary Foake.

Working in partnership with Delaware North, a global leader in hospitality and food service, our students were given the chance to ask vital questions to industry experts and experience working in mass scale kitchens.

Janos Kokeny, a level 2 catering student described the day as a:

Unique and extremely useful experience for catering students.

Tony Pecoraro, our head chef at the Jubilee Restaurant was the lead for the day, and provided the students with more exposure to the food and catering. Tony stated:

The visit and tour was very educational and enjoyed by all students and staff. Students had the opportunity to taste the food, watch the food demonstration by Gary Foakes, ask questions and apply for jobs.

On Wednesday 3rd of January 2018, our catering students got a taste of what it is really like to work in the catering industry. At this event, the students received valuable insight how to gain the best skills behind the elusive industry. With an exclusive panel of some of the best chefs from all around the country and influential figures in recruitment, it gave in-depth knowledge that our students needed to progress and thrive in their chosen career path. The VIP panel consisted of the Head Chef Laurence Colmer and Daniel Piggott from the Palace of Westminster, The Conrad London St. James Executive Head Chef Michael Riordan, The Cranleigh Restaurant General Manager Lisa Fisher, The Savoy Hotel London Recruitment Advisor Lucas Perelstein, The Ninth Planet Personnel founder Marion Gordon and The Plough Bar and Restaurant Head Chef, Russel Door.

With each special guest giving a brief talk about their career and what they did to achieve their goals, it gave the students the opportunity to get in front of exceptional professionals and ask all the vital questions. With group workshops and recruitment discussions, Marion from The Ninth Planet Personnel advised;

Enthusiasm is critical when looking for the right candidate.

The Savoy Hotel recruitment advisor Lucas also agreed stating that;

It’s vital to have good credentials and solid catering qualifications.

Russel Door, Head Chef at The Plough restaurant in Cranham, gave a great insight into his career journey and how he;

Started from nothing to now being my own boss.

An example of exemplary achievements were our former catering student Daniel Piggott who completed his qualifications at Havering College and now works at The House of Commons. He recently won multiple gold medal awards for the best main course in a nationally recognised competition in the forum 2

After the successful event, our own Jubilee Restaurant manager at our Quarles campus in Harold Hill, Essex, Tony Pecoraro stated;

The Catering Forum is an excellent way for our students to have the opportunity to meet top chefs, catering executives and recruitment agencies, and be able to ask relevant questions to their future employers and recruiters. The event was enjoyed and appreciated by all sides.

Our Performing Arts students have had an exciting and challenging term after participating in two audition workshops with guest professional dancers and business owners Leon Poulton- former Ballet Boyz company dancer and Mini Willets- professional dancer and Director of Runway House.  The workshops involved intense drills, creative tasks and learning professional repertoire. Both workshops gave an amazing insight to the expectations of professional standards within the performing arts industry and both Leon and Mini gave lots of advice on how to be successful in the arts. The students left buzzing, inspired and sweaty.

Mini Willets said

I Really enjoyed it, the students had great focus and show great potential
